Julie Meeks led today’s lesson from The Bible Jesus Read by Philip Yancey. This first lesson of the book was entitled, “Is the Old Testament Worth It?” Julie began by giving all present a Bible trivia game. 80% of Americans can’t answer the following: “What is the first book of the Bible?” “Did Noah have a wife named Joan of Arc?” “What are the ten commandments?” Fortunately, the Genesis class came through with the answers (not exactly with flying colors, though!). Most of us are more drawn to the New Testament rather than the Old. Many find it difficult to read, hard to understand, full of violence, anger, death, and destruction. Ironically, these things are what our news media reports the most! Even though three-fourths of the Bible consists of the O.T., it is the least understood. Today’s video stated that this part of the Bible answers where we came from, how we got here, and where we are going. The O.T. is God speaking directly to us. It describes God’s personal and intimate relationship with heroes such as Moses, Abraham, and David. However, God focused much more on their weaknesses and foibles than their heroics. Julie pointed out that the greatest and most accurate account of ancient world history comes from the Old Testament- over a millennia’s worth, in fact. Need therapy?…counseling?…comforting? Try the Psalms! After all, during Jesus’ life here on Earth, the Old Testament was all there was! With Julie’s guidance, let’s give the Old Testament another chance!! Reading and comprehending the O.T. will make the story of Jesus complete.
