Lesson
7/20/08
Rick Herring shared some facts about Augusta Urban Ministries before sharing a bible lesson.
Facts about AUM:
1. Founded in 1967
2. Located on Hale Street in the old Murray Biscuit factory
3. Provide transitional housing ( 5 houses) to families referred by DFACS or United Way
4. Have a furniture and appliance bank for those who qualify through DFACS
5. Bicycle ministry – provide bike for transportation
6. White Christmas – provided Christmas to over 700 families ( 200 people) last year. Distribute the 2nd Saturday in December. Utilizes a common database between Salvation Army, SFACS, United Way, and First Baptist Church.
7. Tax assistance – helped in completing 142 tax returns last year
Wesley Church assisted in providing a new roof for one of the transition houses, participates in the White Christmas with the Angel Tree, and is part of the bike ministry.
Bible Study:
Christ as a Servant (Foot washing) – John 13: 1-8 and 12-20
Christ used foot washing is a example of how we can show love and humility. William Barkley says that in these scriptures Christ’s true nature is revealed.
Rick read a passage from Mother Teresa on humility. She says that humility leads to unity, and unity leads to peace.
Not only does Christ give us an example of humility but also an example of leadership.
